Render Painting in Bridgend

Bridgend Decorators paint rendered walls across Bridgend and the surrounding area.
What we cover:
- Smooth and fine-textured render — standard exterior repaint or colour change
- Hairline crack filling and surface repairs before painting
- Biological growth treatment — algae and moss cleared and treated
- K-Rend and polymer render systems — correct paint compatibility confirmed
- Lime render on period properties — breathable coatings throughout
Rendered walls are extremely common across Bridgend County Borough. South Wales housing has a long tradition of rendering over stone and brick — from rendered stone cottages in the rural and valley areas to postwar estates where render was used to modernise blockwork construction.
We cover Bridgend town, Pencoed, Maesteg, Porthcawl, Coity, Bryncethin, Laleston, and the surrounding area.

Render Painting Services
Different render types require different approaches. We identify the render system before quoting and apply the correct product throughout.
Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
Smooth render is the most common exterior finish on mid-twentieth-century housing across South Wales. A smooth rendered wall takes paint well with the right preparation. We use breathable masonry paints throughout — formulated for rendered surfaces and allowing the wall to release moisture vapour.
A full refresh typically involves a pressure wash, crack filling, priming on bare or repaired areas, and two finish coats. For properties near Porthcawl, salt-laden wind off the Bristol Channel accelerates render cracking and paint failure compared to inland addresses. For pebbledash surfaces rather than smooth render, we have a dedicated service.
K-Rend and Polymer Render Systems
K-Rend and similar thin-coat polymer render systems are increasingly common on properties re-rendered in the last fifteen years. These systems use a through-coloured finish where colour is mixed into the render itself.
They can be painted if the colour has faded or if patching has left unmatched areas. The critical point is product compatibility — standard masonry paint applied directly to polymer render without the correct primer will not bond reliably. We confirm render type before quoting and use a compatible primer where K-Rend is present.
Lime Render on Period Properties
Older stone cottages in the rural areas around Bridgend and some Victorian terraces in Maesteg and Porthcawl may have lime render rather than modern cement-based render. Lime render is softer, more flexible, and highly moisture-permeable.
Lime-rendered walls must not be sealed with non-breathable paint. We use breathable coatings on lime render, typically silicate or silicone-based, and advise on product selection during the initial assessment. We cover all masonry painting surfaces including exposed stone and brick.
Biological Growth Treatment
North-facing rendered walls in Wales collect algae and moss quickly. Painting over biological growth is one of the most common causes of early paint failure — the paint bonds to the algae rather than the render, and when the algae dies and releases, the paint lifts with it.
We apply a fungicidal treatment after the initial pressure wash and allow the surface to dry fully before painting. Render painting is often part of a wider exterior painting project.

Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs

Filling Cracks Before Painting
Hairline cracks are normal in rendered exterior walls. Render moves slightly with seasonal temperature changes, and over years these movements produce fine cracks, most commonly at corners, around openings, and where the render meets other materials.
Left unfilled, hairline cracks allow water ingress. In a Welsh climate, frost causes water entering cracks to expand them rapidly. We use exterior flexible filler or a fine mortar mix depending on crack width and depth. Filled areas are primed before the finish coat is applied so the repair is invisible in the final result.
What to Expect on a Full Render Repaint
A 3-bed semi with all elevations rendered typically takes two to three days: one day for washing, treatment, and crack filling, then one to two days for painting depending on drying conditions. Larger detached properties with scaffold requirements take longer.
A complete colour change is one of the most common reasons clients have their rendered walls repainted. Significant changes — dark to light, or vice versa — may require a tinted undercoat to maintain full coverage. We advise on this at the assessment stage.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the rendered surface: crack condition, biological growth, existing paint adhesion, and any areas of render failure. We confirm scope and provide a fixed price.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is cleaned to remove algae, lichen, moss, loose paint, and surface contamination.
3. Mould Treatment
Affected areas receive a fungicidal wash and are left to dry fully.
4. Crack Filling and Repairs
Hairline cracks and damaged areas are filled and allowed to cure.
5. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, and all adjacent surfaces are masked before any paint is applied.
6. Priming
Bare or repaired areas receive a masonry primer to ensure adhesion and even finish absorption.
7. Finish Coats
Two coats of breathable masonry paint applied by roller and brush. Final inspection before we leave.

Typical Price Ranges
Typical range: £450 to £2,500 depending on property size and surface condition.
3-bed terraced, rendered front elevation only (e.g. Maesteg or Bridgend town centre terrace): £450–£800. 3-bed semi, all rendered elevations (e.g. Pencoed or Bryncethin semi): £900–£1,600. 4-bed detached, fully rendered: £1,400–£2,500. Scaffold hire if required: £300–£600 additional.
What Affects the Cost
Surface condition — heavily stained or cracked walls require more preparation time. Property height — two-storey properties without safe ladder access require a scaffold tower. Number of coats — faded or bare render needs a primer coat before the two finish coats.
