Bridgend’s Deck Painting Specialists

For Rest Bay and Newton properties close to the Bristol Channel, we use a product range with higher UV and moisture resistance — the combination of sea spray and direct coastal sun degrades standard finishes faster.

Decking Boards

We assess the condition of every board before starting. Boards that have gone grey from UV exposure but are structurally sound can often be restored with a thorough clean and a penetrating oil or stain. Boards starting to split or delaminate are flagged before any product goes on.

Balustrades and Posts

We paint balustrades and posts in the same session as the deck boards. All fixings and metalwork are masked before painting begins. Posts set into concrete are sealed at the base to prevent moisture ingress.

Steps and Handrails

Steps and handrails carry the most foot traffic of any part of a deck. We treat steps with additional coats on the tread face. Handrails are sanded back to remove any previous coating that has begun to peel before brush application.

Deck Staining and Anti-Slip Options

Choosing between a stain and a paint depends on the timber species, the existing finish, and how you want the deck to look and perform over time.

Deck Staining vs Paint

Penetrating stains are the right choice for most pressure-treated softwood decking — they feed the wood rather than coating it, so they do not crack or peel when boards move through seasonal moisture changes. Exterior deck paints are better suited to hardwood decking or decks where the timber colour needs to be hidden completely.

Anti-Slip Finishes

A wet deck is a safety risk. Anti-slip finishes add a fine grit texture to the coating surface without noticeably changing the appearance. We apply anti-slip finishes as standard on all steps, and offer them as an option on main deck areas. For fence and timber structures alongside the deck, see our fence painting page.

Here’s How It Works

1. Survey

We inspect the full deck, including boards, balustrades, posts, and steps. We check for split boards, loose fixings, and any areas with active rot or fungal growth.

2. Cleaning

The deck is pressure washed to remove algae, moss, and any previous coating that has failed. We use a timber cleaner on stubborn staining before washing down.

3. Repairs

Damaged or split boards are replaced. Loose fixings are re-tightened. Rotten sections are removed and new timber is cut and fitted before any coating begins.

4. Priming

Bare timber and new sections receive a preservative primer. The full deck is allowed to dry for the time specified by the product manufacturer before any finish coat is applied.

5. Finish Coats

Two coats of the chosen stain or paint are applied. Steps receive an additional coat on the tread face. Anti-slip aggregate is broadcast into the second coat on steps and specified areas before it cures.
