Pebbledash Painting in Bridgend

Bridgend Decorators paint pebbledash and pebble dash walls across Bridgend and the surrounding area.
What we cover:
- Pebbledash upper storeys — the most common configuration on 1930s and 1950s semis
- Full-house pebbledash — all elevations painted in a single visit
- Pebble dash repairs — filling areas where stones have detached before painting
- Colour changes — complete recolour from existing shade to a fresh choice
- Biological growth treatment — moss and algae removed before the first coat goes on
Bridgend and the surrounding valleys have a high concentration of pebbledash housing in South Wales. Interwar semis stretching through Pencoed, postwar estates around Bryncethin, and terraced rows through Maesteg are largely pebbledashed.
We cover Bridgend town, Pencoed, Maesteg, Porthcawl, Coity, Bryncethin, and Laleston.

Pebbledash Painting Services
Pebbledash is not painted the same way as a smooth rendered wall. The stones create a deeply textured surface that requires specialist technique.
How Pebbledash Is Painted
We use a long-pile masonry roller to push paint deep into the texture. We work it through with a brush to confirm full coverage on the exposed stone faces.
For large areas, we can use a professional airless sprayer, driving paint into the texture efficiently and back-brushing to confirm no missed patches. Pebbledash consumes significantly more paint per m² than smooth surfaces — this is factored into every quote.
Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface
Preparation is the stage that determines how long the finish lasts. We start with a pressure wash to clear biological growth, loose material, and dirt embedded in the crevices.
On north-facing elevations, moss and algae are almost always present. We apply a mould treatment to affected areas and allow the wall to dry fully before any paint is applied. On properties near the Porthcawl coast, driving rain and salt air off the Bristol Channel make thorough preparation especially important.
Colour Options and Paint Selection
Pebbledash takes colour change well. The textured surface holds paint firmly once properly primed, and a fresh colour can transform the appearance of the whole house. The most popular choices on Bridgend’s housing stock are off-whites and warm greys.
We use breathable masonry paint throughout — thick-bodied trade products like Dulux Weathershield, Johnstone’s Stormshield, or Sandtex. If you are changing colour significantly, a primer coat or tinted undercoat may be needed to achieve full coverage.
Pebbledash on the Upper Storey Only
Most interwar semis in Bridgend and Pencoed follow the same configuration: rendered brick on the ground floor, pebbledash on the upper storey. Painting the upper storey only and finishing the ground-floor render separately requires careful masking at the transition.
This is usually at the fascia line or the first-floor string course. We quote each elevation and surface type separately so there are no surprises.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Filling Detached Pebbles
Pebbles detach over time due to movement in the render coat, frost damage, or impact. On older properties, it is common to find patches where stone coverage is thin or missing. These patches stand out clearly once the wall is repainted if they are not addressed first.
We assess the condition of the pebbledash surface before quoting. Where repairs are needed, we carry out minor filling and texture-matching as part of the job. We only quote for work we know will produce a lasting result.
Part of a Wider Exterior Project
Pebbledash painting is often part of a wider exterior painting project. We regularly combine pebbledash painting with window frame painting, fascia painting, or garage door painting in a single visit.
Where the render beneath has failed significantly, we advise on the extent before starting. We only quote for work we are confident will produce a lasting result.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the wall surface: biological growth, detached pebbles, cracking, and existing paint condition. We confirm the scope and provide a fixed price.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is washed to remove dirt, algae, moss, and loose material embedded in the pebbles.
3. Mould Treatment
Affected areas receive a fungicidal wash and are left to dry fully.
4. Repairs
Detached pebbles and bare patches are filled and allowed to cure.
5. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, rainwater goods, and any surrounding brickwork are masked before paint is applied.
6. First Coat
Long-pile roller application, worked into the texture with a brush.
7. Second Coat
Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Final inspection before we leave.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Bridgend
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01656 338443 for a precise quote.
Typical Price Ranges
Typical range: £550 to £2,200 depending on property size, extent of coverage, and surface condition.
3-bed terraced, pebbledash upper half (e.g. Pencoed or Maesteg terrace): £550–£900. 3-bed semi, pebbledash throughout: £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached, fully pebbledashed: £1,200–£2,200. Scaffold tower hire if required: £200–£400 additional.
What Affects the Cost
Coverage — more pebbledash means more wall area and more paint. Surface condition — heavy algae, detached pebbles, and long-neglected walls add preparation time. Paint consumption — pebbledash uses more paint per m² than any smooth surface, and this is factored into every quote.
Combining Services
Pebbledash painting is part of our wider exterior painting service. For brick, stone, and smooth rendered walls, see our masonry painting page.

Pebbledash painting is often combined with window frame, fascia, or garage door painting in the same visit. We can discuss combining these into one project when you call.
